Katie Chou
Head Coach

Katie Chou (Chou) grew up all over—Thailand, Taiwan, LA—before moving to the Bay area to go to Cal where she's been ever since. She joined CWR with no prior rugby experience as a freshman while studying EECS at Berkeley and quickly fell in love with it. She continued her Rugby career post college playing for the Berkeley All Blues, going on to win a National Championship with them under legendary coach Kathy Flores.
Why Chou Likes Coaching
"I love the challenges that CWR presents every year. Not having the varsity status, we don't have the luxury of recruitment like other varsity programs. But that presents an opportunity to introduce this amazing sport to new and first time players. To be able to play a small part in players development, in my opinion, has such a humbling and rewarding experience. I am blessed to have the opportunity every year with CWR."
Julie Kieu (JQ)
Director of Rugby

Julie Kieu (JQ) began her rugby career at Cal and went on to play for the National Championship winning Berkeley All Blues. She has coached and managed the All Blues, in addition to serving ast he Team Manager for the PR7s Retrievers and Headliners. She joined the CWR coaching staff with Chou and ensures the team retains its logistical dominance in the league.
Jessica Lewis
Assistant Coach

Dr. Jessica Lewis grew up in California and was a standout rugby player during her four years playing for Cal, being named an All-American five times across 7s and 15s. She then went on to play for the Berkeley All Blues and captained Life West, where she earned her Doctorate in Chiropractic Medicine. Lewis joined the Cal coaching staff at the beginning of the 2025 season, and was added to the Cal Women's Rugby Hall of Fame in 2026.
Evan Hoese
Backs Coach

Evan started her rugby career as a walk-on at Harvard Rugby and has played ever since. She was named MVP at the collegiate level and on the All-American squad in 2011. Despite facing injury, she went on to play in the WPL and with the USA Eagles. In 2023, she was a part of the PR 7s championship team. With the start of the inaugural WER season in 2025, Evan was named to the Bay Breakers. Not only has Evan paved her way as a dominant player, but she is an amazing leader and coach. She coaches the All Blues D1 side, the U23 Grizzlies Select Team, and is the Vice President of the Northern California Rugby Football Union.
